HIT Expands Summer Events for Veterans, Military Spouses, and Families

This summer, Heroes In Transition (HIT) is increasing its offerings for veterans, military spouses, and military families throughout the region.

“We continue to see an increased demand for outings that allow service members, veterans, and their families to connect with one another in a social setting,” said HIT Executive Director Nicole Spencer. “It’s a way for them to form bonds with others who have shared similar experiences in the military. Often, these bonds serve as a crucial support structure for those still making the transition to civilian life.”

The free events for military families include a fishing charter on Sunday, July 14, out of Falmouth Harbor aboard Patriot Party Boats. Afterwards, families will enjoy a picnic lunch provided by HIT.

On Tuesday, August 6, military families will make the trek to Fenway Park to watch the Boston Red Sox play the Kansas City Royals. Four days later, on August 10, families are invited to spend the day at the Cape Cod Inflatable Park in West Yarmouth.

For the seventh straight year, HIT will be hosting its Families In Transition (FIT) Week, a 5-day camp that allows military families to experience the healing qualities of horses. Participants will have the chance to groom, ride, and connect with the animals at Camp Lyndon in Sandwich. Afterwards, they will enjoy a free meal as well as group activities for both parents and their children.

Due to the popularity of the program, HIT is adding a third week for the first time ever. FIT Week will be held on the following dates: Monday, July 8-Friday, July 12; Monday, July 29-Friday, August 2; and Monday, August 12-Friday, August 15.

Along with these outings, HIT organizes regular monthly events for service members, veterans, and their spouses. On a bimonthly basis, military couples gather for an activity that will include sailing in August.

Every other month, HIT organizes an event for veterans along with a separate one for spouses. On Saturday, June 29, veterans will spend the morning golfing at Sandwich Hollows Golf Club followed by lunch. The next day, military spouses will hike GRACE Trail in Plymouth followed by lunch.

HIT is also inviting veterans, service members, and military families to the Cotuit Kettleers game against the Harwich Mariners on Friday, July 12 at 5 pm for the annual Heroes In The Park. In partnership with The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod and the Kettleers, HIT will be honoring veterans and active military personnel, and providing them with a free meal.

Those interested in attending any of these events should contact HIT as soon as possible. Many are almost at capacity, Spencer said, evidence of the demand for these types of programs. “We are already planning events for late summer and the fall, including a Female Wellness Day in September, our Couples Retreat in October, and our monthly outings through the end of the year,” she said. “We have plenty of opportunities for veterans, service members, spouses, and their children to benefit from the work we’re doing.”
