Heroes In Transition (HIT) is offering a free yoga workshop for individuals currently serving as well as veterans on Saturday, March 13, 5:30-6:30 pm, at Sportsite Health and Racquet Club in Sandwich.

“This is a great opportunity for our country’s service members and veterans to learn practical tools to reduce anxiety and stress,” HIT Executive Director Nicole Spencer said. “There are a host of benefits yoga can offer people who have served our country, from increasing concentration to helping heal from post-traumatic stress disorder. We’re excited to offer this workshop as an avenue for holistic treatment.”

The workshop will be led by yoga instructor Sarah Daley who has taught similar classes that Heroes In Transition has funded in the past at Otis Air National Guard Base. Sportsite is donating the space for Saturday’s class.

Daley has witnessed firsthand the positive impact yoga can have on our military. “You use, slow, mindful movements and long, mindful breaths to reduce stress and to reduce anxiety,” she said. “If you practice yoga and meditation, or even breathing exercises, it can help combat depression.”

As the daughter of a veteran who struggled with PTSD, Daley expressed pride in the classes she has taught for Heroes In Transition. “It’s the most satisfying work that I do,” she said. “Being involved with Heroes has given me a lot of insight into the struggles my father had.”

During the class, participants will learn gentle yoga poses that help create balance and build resiliency. Daley will also teach how to use the energy of breath to reduce anxiety and meditation techniques to promote relaxation.

Mats and yoga props will be provided. Comfortable clothes are suggested for ease of movement.

Individuals interested in attending Saturday’s workshop should contact veterans@heroesintransition.org. Due to health and safety restrictions and because space is limited, people must register in advance to attend.
